G8 summit

Summit ends with climate 'vision' World leaders have announced a "shared vision" on climate change. Concluding a summit in northern Japan, leaders from the G8 and developing countries said "deep cuts" in greenhouse gas emissions were needed. However, specific action points are missing and the discussions failed to bridge differences between rich and emerging countries in curbing emissions….

Solar power

A new way of capturing energy from the Sun could increase the power generated by solar panels tenfold, a team of American scientists has shown. The new technique involves coating glass with a specific mixture of transparent dyes which redirect light to photovoltaic cells in the frame. The technology could even be used to convert glass buildings into vast energy plants. The technology could be in production within three years, the team said…

In the UK and other ‘developed countries’ we seem to be so taken up with the pursuit of material wealth, and concerns about the credit crunch, stockmarket, house prices and so on…Watching a documentary recently about gorillas it brought home an innocence in their simplicity that we appear to have lost as we have progressed up the evolutionary tree.
